Over the break, library staff worked hard to get the new Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL) ready for January 3. The Learning Commons, spanning the first two floors, is open, with new computers and workrooms.
Most of the "old" Info Commons computers in MacKimmie will slowly be decommissioned in the near future.

What does this mean for you?
1. We'll have our test catalogue up instead of the real-time version, so if it says a book is out, it might actually be in or vice-versa.

In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the University of Calgary’s Information Commons, Michael Ridley will challenge us to look forward to a broader understanding of services for learners as we prepare to move into our new facility. The opening of the new Learning Commons in the Taylor Family Digital Library will see increased opportunities for academic engagement. At the University of Guelph, the Library, Computing and Communications Services, Office of Open Learning, Student Affairs and Teaching Support Services collaborate to support and enhance undergraduate and graduate student learning, writing, research, numeracy, and technology at their Learning Commons.

Following his presentation, Mr. Ridley will be joined on a panel by leaders from the University of Calgary for a question and answer session. Our objective is to stimulate discussion of 21^st century learning environments, the needs that must be addressed and what each of us can bring to enrich the environment.

Panellists from the UofC are:
Meg Martin, Vice President Academic, University of Calgary Students Union;
Tom Hickerson, Vice-Provost (Libraries and Cultural Resources) and University Librarian;
Ann Tierney, Vice-Provost (Students); and,
Harold Esche, Chief Information Officer.

About the Speaker:
Michael Ridley is Chief Information Officer and University Librarian, University of Guelph. Ridley holds degrees from the University of Guelph (BA), the University of New Brunswick (MA) and the University of Toronto (MLS). Previously he held positions at the University of Waterloo and McMaster University.
Ridley has served as President of the Canadian Association for Information Science, President of the Ontario Library Association, member of the Board of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries and Chair of the Ontario Council of University Libraries. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) and the Canadian University Council of Chief Information Officers (CUCCIO).
In 2007 he was named "Academic Librarian of the Year" by the Ontario College and University Library Association (OCULA), a division of the Ontario Library Association (OLA). In 2008 he was awarded the newly renamed Larry Moore OLA Distinguished Service Award from the Ontario Library Association.

The Computer Journal is Changing

The Computer Journal is increasing its focus and frequency:

They launched their first specialist section, Section B: Networks and Computer Systems, in 2009, and will sharpen focus still further with the launch of Section C: Computational Intelligence early next year, with a change in frequency from 8 to 10 issues in 2010.

We will receive all three sections comprising of 10 issues from 2010.

Future developments:

This one has been in the works for a while.
Basically, one can search for graphics in the literature, such as tables, charts, illustrations, etc. :

"Deep indexing for tables, figures, graphs, charts and other illustrations from the scholarly research and technical literature.

"Deep indexing" categorizes data, variables and other content represented in tables, maps, photographs and other figures. Usually, indexing of research articles is done at a rather high, general level where only the key concepts of the work are represented by a dozen or so index terms. But by going deeper and specifically indexing the content associated with all the individual tables and figures, CSA Illustrata enables the researcher to find information that otherwise would not be retrievable in traditional, article-level and full-text indexing systems."

Tom Hickerson, Vice-Provost (Libraries and Cultural Resources and University Librarian), will kick-off FTD with a session on Convergence of Knowledge and Culture: our Design for the Future: the Taylor Family Digital Library. Tom will discuss how the Taylor Family Digital Library (scheduled to open in fall 2010) will bring together libraries, archives, museums, and the university press for the benefit of scholars. It will be a 21st century research facility in the heart of campus which will house a "collection of the future" integrating access to traditional print, museum, and archival materials. Come hear about the strategic plans and learn how the Taylor Library will embody a new campus prototype for learning, teaching and conducting research. There will be time for questions.

CISTI Source Discontinued as of April 1 (but Don't Panic)

The federal government is discontinuing CISTI Source as of this August. The Library's contract ends March 31 (the end of today), and we will not be renewing it.

Don't Panic: you can still request articles that you normally would have requested through CISTI Source using our Interlibrary Loan Request Form available at: http://library.ucalgary.ca/services/interlibrary-loan

After tomorrow, if you try to access CISTI Source, you'll see:
"The Federal Government is discontinuing CISTI Source as of August 2009.

Because of better interlibrary loan coverage and tools such as SFX, use of CISTI Source at the University of Calgary has declined dramatically since 2003. The Library decided not to renew our contract after March 31, 2009 for the last few months of CISTI Source’s existence. Please use the interlibrary loan form to request the scientific, medical and technical articles that you used to request with CISTI Source :

When printing articles from ScienceDirect while at the Info Commons, save the .pdf file to your PC and rename it to something shorter first. Our printers can't handle the long filenames that ScienceDirect gives its files and will charge you for the print job and and the same time, won't print.

New Location for Interlibrary Loan Pickup

Beginning on Monday, September 8, all interlibrary loans in the MacKimmie Library will be available for pick up at the MacKimmie Library Circulation Desk on the first floor. This change extends the hours during which interlibrary loans can be picked up to all hours that the MacKimmie Circulation Desk is open. (See Circulation Desk Hours:

University of Calgary / Libraries and Cultural Resources Funds Open Access Authors Fund

The Library recently announced the establishment of an annual $100,000 Authors Fund to provide University of Calgary faculty and graduate students with financial support to cover Open Access author fees.

Basically, if you'd like to publish in a journal that charges author fees for open access, funding is available.

1800 Elsevier e-books have just been added to the catalogue. The books are being made available via the ebrary platform/interface. This means getting all the extras that ebrary offers: highlighting and bookmarking, and adding the book to your "bookshelf." If you don't have an ebrary "bookshelf", sign up for a free one

Web of Science content expanded from 1900 to present

The library has enhanced access to the Web of Science database by expanding its science content from 1900 to present. Previously, science content was only available from 1975.
Web of Science also provides content from the Social Science Index from 1956 and the Arts & Humanities Index from 1975.
Web of Science provides access to nearly 9,300 prestigious, high impact research journals in the world and is the primary tool for determining how many times an author has been cited in the literature.

There will be a UCIT Scheduled Outage to upgrade server and network infrastructure on Saturday, May 17, 2008 - 00:01 to 23:59 (Victoria Day long weekend - Friday midnight to Saturday midnight)

All Services will be impacted, including:

* AirUC/Reznet wireless
* Network connectivity and Internet access in some buildings
* UofC web applications
* myUofC
* Blackboard
* Peoplesoft
* Elluminate
* Email/Webmail
* DTP File Services

The network outage is anticipated to be less than the 24 booked hours, and should be completed in the morning between 08:00 and 12:00. During this time, campus network connectivity and Internet access many not be available in Biological Sciences, Earth Sciences, CCIT, Social Sciences, Professional Faculties, Kinesiology, ICT and Science B. Reznet and AirUC wireless will be unavailable campus wide.

Libraries and Cultural Resources, the Teaching and Learning Centre and Information Technologies are pleased to present the annual Faculty Technology Days: Teaching and Learning with Technology, May 6-8, 2008.

This year a real highlight is our keynote session on May 6 which will focus on Social Networking and the Academy. Ryerson University has brought issues of ‘good' and 'bad’ use of social networking to the fore. Where do you stand? A panel of experts on social networking as a communication and learning tool will discuss the pros and cons of social networking in the academy. How useful a tool is this method of communication? DO try this at home...Search multiple databases from one search box

Have you ever wanted to search more than one database at a time?
Well, the Library is now running a trial of a product that does just that: Serials Solutions' Federated Search product, 360 Search. It can be accessed via the link at the top of the Research Databases page:
(http://library.ucalgary.ca/researchdatabases/index.php). The trial runs until April 10.

Here's how it works:
On the default screen, you'll see categories. Each category covers several databases. How will you know which databases? Just click on the category.
Once you've chosen your category (or you can search all categories), enter your search.
Results are summarized on the left by topic and database. On the right, the first few results are displayed. If there are a lot of results, you can ask it to bring back the "rest" of your results. The results also tell you which database they came from.

New Users of the Interlibrary Loan Form

Earlier this week, the library started a new delivery method for Interlibrary Loan items (basically, getting you articles and book chapters that our library doesn't have.)

This is a new thing, so, regarding encountering anything weird: It seems that if you haven't used our online request forms ever before, you are going to have problems...new users get stuck in an endless loop.

SO....
New users need to contact Document Delivery Services before they can use the web request form:

For the Health Sciences Library: phone 220-7419 or email meddoc@ucalgary.ca

Users who have made at least one request before March 10 should have no problem using the web request form.

New Interlibrary Loan Delivery Method

What does this mean?
You will get an email with a link in it. Click on the link, et voila! A pdf appears and you can print your article.

Comparisons of nations’ scientific outputs over the years have shown that Canada’s researchers have plenty to be proud of, consistently maintaining their country’s position among the world’s top ten (see, for example, Nature 430, 311–316; 2004). Alas, their government’s track record is dismal by comparison. When the Canadian government announced earlier this year that it was closing the office of the national science adviser, few in the country’s science community were surprised. New Feature in Scopus (Elsevier database)

Tired of saving pdfs from Scopus individually to your hard drive?

Well, Scopus has come up with a new "Document Download Manager" that lets you save its pdfs en masse. More info is on their Web page at:

There's no mention of bibliographic management software like EndNote, RefWorks, etc., so one probably can't save directly to them, but this is a pretty big improvement nonetheless.

I am trying it out as I type. It's chugging in the background and it seems a bit slow - I selected three articles. An interesting thing is that even though the article is not available full-text in Scopus, the Manager will find a pdf copy anyway, and download it to your hard drive. This must be the relationship with "QUOSA" that the news release mentions. How does this compare with what SFX finds? Well, it doesn't seem to be as complete as SFX. This means that if Scopus' Document Download Manager doesn't download a pdf, that pdf could still be available in another database for download. Darn.

BLT is open again, but there'll be reduced seating until the carpets are cleaned and repairs finished.

Current Periodicals with the call number range from HD 9560.1 .S73 to JA1 .C65 will be on 11LT until the cleanup is finished and the shelving is moved back in place. There will be signage directing you to 11LT for these periodicals.

Update on the Basement, Library Tower

The Basement of the Library Tower will reopen Thursday afternoon with reduced seating. We will have to wait until the carpets are completely cleaned and repairs are finished before the seating is back up to full capacity. Repair of the damaged drywall will take place today and tomorrow. Cleaning of the carpets will begin during the weekend.

No one is allowed down there and some of the current periodicals have been moved to 11LT:

The other thing resulting from this was that last night, our connection to IT was severed, which cut off our access to just about all things library (Web pages, catalogue, research databases...)

Effective Writing Program Workshops in the Library

This fall and winter, in collaboration with McKimmie Library, the Effective Writing Program will be offering 90 free writing workshops for undergraduate students plus 12 hours per week of drop-in writing consultations at the Information Commons beginning in October. These workshops and the drop-in writing consultations are made possible through a $25,000 grant from the Students' Union.

The workshops include:

Block A: Getting to a completed draft
Block B: Using sources correctly and documenting them properly
Block C: Eliminating basic errors in sentences and grammar
Block D: Brushing up on basics: Grammar Refresher for ESL Students

The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) and SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) recently released the SPARC Canadian Author Addendum, a new tool for authors in Canada to retain key rights to the journal articles they publish.

Traditional publishing agreements often require that authors grant exclusive rights to the publisher. The new SPARC Canadian Author Addendum enables authors to secure a more balanced agreement by retaining select rights, such as the rights to reproduce, reuse, and publicly present the articles they publish for non-commercial purposes. It will help Canadian researchers to comply with granting council public access policies, such as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Policy on Access to Research Outputs. The Canadian Addendum reflects Canadian copyright law and is an adaptation of the original U.S. version of the SPARC Author Addendum.

"The SPARC Canadian Author Addendum allows researchers to have maximum impact and visibility for their publications - with the comfort of knowing important rights still belong to them," stated Carolynne Presser, Chair of the CARL Scholarly Communication Committee and Director of Libraries at the University of Manitoba.

"The Canadian Addendum is an important contribution to the ongoing international movement to support authors in making research articles accessible to all who may benefit from their findings," said Heather Joseph, Executive Director of SPARC. "Canada has been a leader in the move toward increased access to research and we're pleased to have played a role in collaborating with CARL on this important initiative."

An explanatory brochure complements the Addendum. Both the brochure and addendum are available in French and English on the CARL and SPARC Web sites and will be widely distributed. CSA Illustrata - Exciting New Research Tool

CSA Illustrata is a new indexing tool which provides indexing at a level not previously possible. Illustrata indexes material down to the level of graphs, diagrams and pictures. So if you want to search for a graph for example on the level of fatty acids in Atlantic cod you will be able to do so. The first prototype of this database provides indexing focussed on the natural sciences and includes coverage of more than 600 journals. New Features in Science Direct--RSS and link to Scopus

Science Direct (Elsevier) has added some new features to makes your searching even easier.

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds - RSS is an established Web standard for the delivery of news headlines and other frequently updated content summaries. RSS feeds will be available on ScienceDirect for search results, citations and new articles, as well as more than 300 pre-selected topics. RSS feeds alert users immediately when Science Direct has new content of interest to them as soon as it is published, keeping users up-to-date with their chosen fields of interest.

Cited By in Scopus - Access to a wealth of citation information is made possible with Cited By in Scopus, which links to specific citations in Scopus - the largest abstract and citation database of research literature and quality Web sources. Cited By in Scopus, which is included on the ScienceDirect article pages, also features a real-time citation count. A Scopus license is not necessary to view the citations for a given article but a ScienceDirect subscription is required

There will also be signs at the new Release station and Xerox printer directing you to pick up your jobs. Write down any comments you have about the process. If there are any problems or concerns let a Navigator (in the dark blue t-shirts) know.

Libraries and Cultural Resources, the Teaching and Learning Centre and Information Technologies are pleased to present the annual Faculty Technology Days: Teaching and Learning with Technology, May 2 - 4, 2007.

Specialized Resources sessions will include an introduction to the new classical music library, GIS data on the Internet, and finding Canadian legal information.

Technology sessions will provide an opportunity to catch up on what’s new plus a refresher on the basics of Blackboard, PowerPoint and Word collaboration tools.Plan to attend a PeopleSoft session on PER, the new PeopleSoft Faculty Centre or PeopleSoft Student Centre.

Instructional sessions will focus on enhancing inquiry based learning and instruction through the use of technology to develop blended learning approaches, develop assessment techniques and hear from your colleagues on how they have applied successful blended learning strategies in their course.

The library has just subscribed to a neat new product, CSA Illustrata: Natural Sciences .

It searches for tables, graphs, maps, images, etc. in the scholarly literature. For example, if you are looking for CT scans of the brain, maps of the grizzly bear's range in Kananaskis (or a picture of the grizzly itself), metabolic pathways, chemical structures, sequences, and other visuals, you can use Illustrata.

Noisy Library

This work will be noisy and small areas around the workers will be closed to the public for a short period of time. BIOSIS Previews

As of January 1, 2007 the library has upgraded our Biological Abstracts subscription to BIOSIS Previews. BIOSIS Previews combines the content from Biological Abstracts and Biological Abstracts/RRM (Reports, Reviews and Meetings). BIOSIS Previews will be available on the ISI platform which is the same platform used to access Web of Science. The ISI platform also enables users to perform simultaneous searches on both BIOSIS Previews and Web of Science (From the drop-down menu from the top of the BIOSIS Previews or Web of Science Search screen select "CrossSearch" and select "GO").
