Reading List Tool Session and Drop-in Q&A

The library has licensed a course reading list tool (brand name “Leganto”). It was “soft-launched” over the summer and is now available in D2L to help you create and reuse reading lists and clear your course reserve readings with the Copyright Office. Some benefits of the tool are:

• Copyright clearance from within the tool
• Analytics (what are students reading?)
• Students can comment on the readings individually
• Ability to add to course readings during term (and see if there is auto copyright clearance)

The library is holding a workshop and two drop-in sessions on the Reading List Tool.

BenchSci, an "antibody search platform"

BenchSci, a relatively new site (launched July 2017), indexes antibody use in scientific journals, including things like the techniques and tissues involved. It is free, though an institutional email is necessary to sign up for an account; they would like for it to remain free to all academic members. BenchSci is based out of Toronto.

BenchSci is still working with publishers, including Cell Press, to index more content. However, it currently includes SpringerNature, and Wiley, among others, and include many Open Access publications.

BenchSci is a free online platform designed to help scientists find antibodies from publications. Their proprietary machine-learning algorithm was trained by PhD-level scientists to identify and understand the usage of commercial antibodies in the research literature.

When searching for a specific protein target, BenchSci curates published data in the form of figures to simplify the literature search process. The figures can then be filtered by specific experimental contexts cited in the paper such as techniques, tissue, cell lines, and more, to help users pinpoint antibodies that have been published under experimental conditions matching their study interest.

AIP Publishing’s new author license no longer requires authors to transfer their copyright

AIP Publishing's latest issue of Library Matters reports that
"this exclusive license enable authors to retain copyright and encourages them to post and share their accepted manuscripts immediately on acceptance.  At the same time, it grants AIP Publishing the rights it needs to publish their work."

Linking to IEEE articles unpredictable, & work around

Linking to IEEE articles from our homepage (and "Big Search Box") may be unpredictable over the next day or two as ProQuest works with IEEE to resolve technical issues. (The library uses a ProQuest service to link references and full-text.) ProQuest and IEEE hope to have a fix in place ideally by Friday.

If the link to the article does not work, go to the journal instead, and then browse to the article via volume, issue, and page number.

If you have been previously successful in accessing an article, try clearing your cache and then go to the article again.

OnePetro not linking to full-text

Our subscription to OnePetro is currently "wonky". The database can still be searched, however, links to full-text have disappeared. Our Collections folks are looking into it.

Royal Society now has an Open Access option

Royal Society Open Science is now accepting submissions. This journal is eligible for the UofC's Open Access Author's Fund. UofC authors also receive a 25% discount on article processing charges because of a UofC membership.

ScienceDirect (from Elsevier) articles improved for iOS and Android

Elsevier has improved its ScienceDirect mobile interface to make reading articles on a tablet/phablet/phone easier. Changes include saving articles/references to Mendeley and RefWorks, and the ability to view references without leaving the article.
(The usual "authenticate through the library first" instructions still apply.)

Gallagher Library Temporary Closure August 6-27

The Gallagher Library will be closed Tues., Aug. 6-Tues., Aug. 27, inclusive as they are having their main floor carpet replaced. As Aug. 5 is a holiday, their last full day of operations will be Fri., Aug. 2. 

Staff will be working out of the Taylor Family Digital Library, and can be reached at gallagher.library@ucalgary.ca. If you need to get a book from the collection, place a hold in the catalogue; staff will be able retrieve holds, and you can pick them up at TFDL. The only exception to this is August 8-13, where staff will NOT have access to the Gallagher due to asbestos removal. Holds may still be placed, but they will not be picked up until August 14.

If you have questions about the closure, feel free to stop in this week!
